One of the significant events in Maribor’s history was the Ottoman siege that took place during the 16th century. As part of the Ottoman Wars in Europe, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent launched a campaign against the Habsburg Monarchy in 1532, with Maribor, a city in modern-day Slovenia, being a primary target.
The siege, which began in September 1532, lasted several days. Despite being outnumbered, the city’s defenders, under the leadership of the city’s garrison commander, managed to resist the invading Ottoman forces. Key to their successful defense were Maribor’s robust fortifications and strategic use of artillery.
The Ottoman forces eventually withdrew, unable to capture the city. This marked a significant victory during the Ottoman Wars, showcasing Maribor’s resilience and strategic importance.
