Pohorje hill is a natural oasis that is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. The most common animals you can expect to see while hiking on Pohorje hill include Roe deer, red deer, chamois, mountain hare, large wood grouse, and blackcock. The area is also home to a number of endemic species, including the Cranberry blue and the Giant peacock moth, which is the largest butterfly in Europe. There are approximately 90 species of birds and more than 700 species of butterflies in the area. The Lake Črno jezero, with its forest surroundings, is protected as a forest reserve and is the only known habitat of peat moss Spaghum riparium in Slovenia.
